Last weekend was Motorsports weekend! First Darby and I took off and went down the TheTrack at Centennial. TheTrack is a karting track where you bring your own equipment if you have it or rent if you don't. This was Darby's debut in the racing world and she really dug it.
Over the next year my goal is to get her comfortable with the karting world and mover her up into faster cars. If you have never been Karting its pretty fun and lets you experience a lot of the dynamics of racing without all the expense. The track there is a great little road course with some elevation change and long enough straights to get the kart up to 40 or 50mph.
On Sunday, I turned my attention to the new racetrack our by Byers called High Plains Raceway or HPR. The plans to build HPR have been in the works for a while and recently they landed enough money to complete the track.
I went out with some friends and attended the Porsche Clubs Drivers Education Day. I had the opportunity to run three sessions out there before having to return back home. HPR is really close to Denver, a welcome change from the hike down to Pueblo. The track has 17 turns and lot of elevation changes and is reasonably hard to remember as there are some blind corners on the track.

Turn 5 is my favorite as it's off camber to right while also dramatically turning down hill. Anything more than a little trail braking and you're going to get a 360 degree view of the landscape instantly. Turn 7 is one of those long sweepers that you can hold full throttle all the way into the hairpin at 8.
The track seems very safe in that if you go four wheels off your probably not going to hit anything but the car may be a little hosed up.
I encourage anyone who has never been to a track but would like to try it out to get involved in a club (Z Club, Porsche, Audi, etc) and try it out. You generally can bring whatever kind of car you own and most of the clubs have instructors that will ride with you to help you get the most out of it.
I'm going to try to get out to HPR again in a few weeks to really push it a little and see what kind of lap times I can put together. As for this coming weekend, I think Darby and I are going to battle it out with some friends back down at Centennial. I love summer!
