What I really want is a home gateway device that presents a unified web interface to my house and stuff. I call it SOAHG (pronounced “so-g”), for Service Oriented Architecture Home Gateway. SOAHG would ‘notice’ new devices on my home network, and give me a unified place to control all these through a web portal.
SOAHG would probably utilizing something
like JMX to embrace my phone, tivo, pc’s, answering
machines, lights, thermostats, etc. Each device would present an XML schema that could describe its
capabilities.. In addition each device
could expose a portlet style interface
into the SOAHG’s portal interface. The
device would be accessible internal or external to my network with a standard
web browser..
- Now I could, modify settings in my tivo..
- Listen to my phone messages…
- Desktop share onto all my different PC’s..
- Turn on and off my lights…
- Adjust my thermostat..
All from one place… The SOAHG could also attach to a
service that would send me SMS messages, emails, etc about the state of my
house, a mp3 version of most recent voice mail, and stream stuff off my
tivo.
I know, some of these devices can do some of these
things. But I’m talk’in about an honest to god plug and play SOAHG here!
How hard could it be… you just need:
One of these , and some of this , and a little of this and your off to the races.
Someone get with it..
